Equality and Diversity E-learning Training Essential to All Staff

E-Learning materials relating to general and specific responsibilities for university staff in relation to equal opportunities are available to all staff via the e-learning platform LearnUpon. The training has been developed specifically for Higher and Further Education, and is used in many Universities. The training will provide you with the necessary knowledge and understanding of a developing and important area of law, in relation to your role and responsibilities. Regrettably, we do live in litigious times and in the event of unjust complaints made against you, the fact that you have completed relevant training in this subject will assist in defending any claims.

You can access the courses at the following link:

Diversity in the Workplace - All staff should be aware of Equality and Diversity procedures at the University and are expected to complete training on Equality and Diversity to understand equality and diversity rights, responsibilities and best practices. This course is the essential introduction to the topic. Learners will be guided through how individuals – and the employer – can be negatively affected by discrimination, why diversity is important and the proven organisational benefits of being an inclusive organisation. This training is provided via an e-learning format from LearnUpon.

Recruitment and Selection – This training must be undertaken by anyone who will be involved in the recruitment and selection of staff.  In this Recruitment and Selection Elearning Course learners get practical guidance on attracting and recruiting the very best people using the university’s recruitment and selection processes.  An ongoing, interactive video case study asks learners to make decisions about a simulated HE recruitment requirement illustrating the importance of equality and diversity.  In addition a series of ‘vox pop’ video interviews with real University staff focus on key areas: Challenges; Training; Diversity; Best Practice; Panel Selection; Unconscious Bias and Keys to Success.  Training is provided via an e-learning format from LearnUpon.

It remains the University’s policy that colleagues involved in recruitment and selection activities should refresh their understanding and knowledge every three years. If you haven’t completed the programme, or undertook it over three years ago, please ensure you complete or retake the programme prior to involvement with any recruitment panels.

Should you have any queries about the Recruitment and Selection process in the University please continue to contact Human Resources.

Unconscious Bias - This training must be undertaken by anyone who will be involved in the recruitment and selection of staff.  It explains how we can overcome our unconscious bias to improve decision making and professional relationships, and to create more open, inclusive and effective organisations.  This training is provided via an e-learning format from LearnUpon.

Everyone suffers from unconscious biases. The key to countering it, is to become mindful of our biases and embed practices that and strategies to mitigate the risks of allowing unconscious bias to influence our decision making. Our unconscious bias course comprehensively covers the key concerns relating to unconscious bias, its impacts at an individual and organisational level, and strategies for mitigating the influence of bias on our decision making. Learners will discover what is unconscious bias, the main types of bias and group biases, why we are all susceptible to bias, the differences between bias, prejudice and stereotyping, as well as the impacts of bias upon recruitment, people development, performance management, leadership and marketing.
