Workstation Naming Conventions

There is a policy for the naming of workstations that are put into the Active Directory domain AD.HUD.AC.UK.

We have established two standard naming conventions to enable the University to manage the PCs on campus in a more effective manner - one for staff PCs and another for student lab PCs

Staff PCs

Staff PCs should be named using its inventory/Local Asset Register number , such as PER12345678 or ABC000912345

It is acceptable to add W7 to the end of PC names.

NOTE: Please exclude any dashes that are part of the inventory number.

Student PCs

The naming convention for student PCs is based on the room number.  This also helps in tracing events related to misuse of computer systems and distiunguishes them from staff PCs.

  • Room No. e.g. CS401
  • A dash e.g. -
  • Workstation No e.g. 01

  • CS401-01
  • ZG23-05
  • CW201-10

It is important to remember that when you are numbering workstations from 1 to 9 that you should include a leading zero e.g. 01, 02, 03

Note - disconnection

Computing & Library Services reserves the right to disconnect any Active Directory PC from the network which does not comply with the policy outlined above
