Staff Active@home Photo Challenge

Working from home can mean that it is harder to keep active as you may be missing out on your daily walk/cycle into work, and are unable to go to the gym.  But keeping active, even if just some simple stretches or low impact movement, really does have a positive effect on both physical and mental health and wellbeing.

As we have had to postpone the staff step challenge for later in the year, the Occupational Health Department have teamed up with Team Hud to introduce a new challenge to help staff keep active whilst working at home.  The new challenge is the Staff Active@home Photo Challenge.   

The competition has now closed and the winners were David Bray, Carolyn Bishop and Hayley Gledhill.

Keeley Hutton, School and Colleges Relationship Officer from Computing and Engineering has seen some lovely views whilst out running at the weekend



Laura Broadbent, Subject Librarian from Computing and Library Services is keeping active at her new home workstation.  And is now wondering if she can bring into the library when we all return to campus!

Julian Hirst, Car Park Attendant, took this picture of his dog Basil who is worried about losing too much weight with all the walking he is doing.  Taken in Kirkheaton on a walk and paddle through the Beck!

Sophie Lupton, Graduate Teaching Assistant from ADA, has been running about 3 times a week 5k or 10k, attempting to get fit for her wedding day! The sunny weather is making her motivation much easier!

Joanne Hellawell, Student Wellbeing Advisor from Student Services, has had a lovely walk up to Longwood Edge with her 15 year old daughter after another busy week supporting our students with their mental health and other concerns from home


Elaine Windle, Library Assistant, is using her exercise time to rake, hoe and dig on her 2 allotments. It is apparently very good for the core muscles!! 



***Winner*** Carolyn Bishop, Schools and Colleges Relationship Officer, has been weightlifting her 14 month old daughter Seren in the back garden – they have been doing mummy and baby workouts together!

Resources you can use to help you stay active

  • Teamhud are helping staff stay healthy, fit and well by posting ’Workout of the Week’. The workouts have been designed to accommodate every ability and require minimal or no equipment.   You can set your account up at: and then download the My Wellness app by Technogym, through your app stores – they will automatically be linked to Team Hud.  This service is completely free of charge.  Once you have downloaded the app, you have the option to use the ‘Tailored Programs’ feature which will ask you a series of questions and will provide you with a programme tailored to suit your needs. You will also have access to our ‘Workout of the week’ which will be designed by one of our amazing instructors every week.
  • Sport England has pulled together exercise ideas for keeping active in and around the home.
  • Celebrity fitness coach Joe Wicks is hosting live P.E lessons over youtube for children to take part in at home. The classes run each weekday at 9am for 30 minutes on his youtube channel and are suitable for children of all ages.
  • The This Girl Can website has a section dedicated to home exercise including easy to follow tutorials.
