Extra Mile Awards 2006: Winners
First prize winner, Cathy Garner receives her Extra Mile Award certificate from nominating student Munsif Dad
First prize went to Cathy Garner from the School of Applied Sciences, was nominated by Adeela Rana and Munsif Dad. Cathy was chosen as the main prize winner based on the submission by Munsif Dad which was as follows:
"I started as [a] part time student in my first year with three modules, I was given 40 credits from my previous study. At the end of year I would have [had] 5 modules completed, [but] only 1 short to progress to 2nd year. By the time I realised, it was too late to do [the] remaining module. I had a word with different members of staff [as to] whether I [could] progress to second year, the course leader thought it would be hard for me to do second year as well as trailing one module from previous year. I went to see Cathy Garner and explained all the situation as my year would be wasted if I did not proceed. She had [a] word with [the] course leader and took the responsibility of doing this module over the summer which was beyond my expectation. It was agreed [that] if I passed my all tests over the summer, I would be allowed to progress. She made a plan for me to do the module over [the] summer which consisted of tests and tutorials. I passed everything with the help of Cathy Garner - without her help it would have been impossible for me to progress to second year. I passed my second year with decent marks and now I am in my final year thanks to Cathy Garner. She has been very supportive and helpful during my studies. Thanks."
Second prize went to Janet Clowery, Resource Centre Manager (School of Applied Sciences). She was nominated by 4 students; Rosina Sarwar, Tejal Patel, Alia Ashraf and Shamila Hajra.
