In addition and on a similar theme Tom and Donna also designed the Extra Mile Award 2007 plaque, which was presented to awardees.Tom and Donna were supported by technicians from the School including Richard Turner from the University Centre Barnsley.
Jason Donnell, BA Textile Craft student
Jason Donnell who is currently in his third year of the BA Textile Craft course and a designer of bespoke handcrafted wall hangings and rugs.
Jason used quotes from Patagonia Revisited by Bruce Chatwin and Paul Theroux as a starting point for designs based on ‘Reflections’.
"And when, after the long trip,I arrived in Patagonia I felt I was nowhere...... This was a discovery - the look of it. I thought: Nowhere is a place."
"Only the Patagonian paradox: tiny blossoms in vast space; to be here, it helped to be a miniaturist, or else interested in enormous empty spaces." There was no intermediate zone of study. Either the enormity of the desert or the sight of a tiny flower. In Patagonia you had to choose between the tiny or the vast."
Reflective surfaces which are found on an everyday basis were photographed and then translated into designs. Jason designed and hand made a framed wall hanging as one of the joint first prizes and also produced pictures based on the reflection theme for our joint third prize winners. He said - "I feel a strong relationship with this quote, as I often realise the beauty of something when I am not expecting to find anything."
