Managing your Online Research Profile

ORCID 

ORCID is a unique identifier that you create and maintain yourself. It is now required by many funders. Your ORCID is a consistent profile that you keep across your entire career. It ensures consistent attribution of your work by distinguishing you from authors with similar names, and keeps all your outputs linked even if your name, affiliation, or research area changes. 

Adding your ORCID directly to published outputs improves discoverability and can also help other systems (like Scopus and Web of Science) to match your outputs accurately, saving you time.

A top tip when creating an ORCID is to add a personal email address, so that you do not lose access if you switch institutions! 

Scopus Author ID 

If you’ve published research in a source that is indexed in Scopus, you’ll already have a Scopus author profile, complete with a unique Scopus Author ID. This is maintained by an algorithm which attempts to list all your Scopus-indexed publications under one profile. The algorithm can make mistakes, but these can be manually edited.

You should check your Scopus record for completeness and accuracy. To do this, search for your name or one of your publications in Scopus. Once you’ve located your author record, click Edit Profile to review and request changes. You’ll also see an option to connect your ORCID, which improves future accuracy by helping the algorithm to identify your outputs.

You may also have 'duplicate' profiles in Scopus (this is particularly common for researchers who have published under multiple affiliations). Using the Author Search tool in Scopus, search for your full name, tick the boxes next to the duplicated profiles, and click Request to Merge Authors.

Web of Science ResearcherID 

If you’ve published research in a source that is indexed Web of Science your work will appear on this database. 

This site uses an algorithm to maintain author records, and profiles can be edited for accuracy. You can manage your record by creating an account and adding your details and publications. You’ll also see an option to connect your ORCID, which can improve future accuracy. 

Google Scholar

Google Scholar profiles must be set up manually.

To do this, you will first need a Google account. Then, navigate to Google Scholar and click on ‘My Profile’, where you’ll be prompted to add your information and publications. 

Unfortunately, Google Scholar cannot be directly synced with the other databases listed on this page. Profiles can auto-update using Google’s indexing, but this can also result in errors.  

To review or edit your profile, navigate to ‘My Profile’ while logged in and click on the pencil icon to make edits. 

PURE

University of Huddersfield staff members on teaching and research or research only contracts will have an author profile on our PURE Research Portal where they are required to upload their research outputs and activities. Scopus and ORCID can also be linked with Pure.
