RIKE can help you access a wide range of funding opportunities from developing fundamental research topics, and/or working with industry, to delivering economic and societal impact.
A number of funding schemes are managed internally within RIKE, including the Public Engagement seed fund, the Impact Acceleration Accounts which support research translation, and the University Research Fund which pump-primes areas with the potential for high impact and income.
Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs) are managed through the KTP Office who have a wealth of expertise and experience in developing successful KTP applications with a broad range of external partners.
The Research Services team can help you access funding from external sources such as the UKRI research councils, charities, and Horizon Europe. Research Services provides support for the entire lifecycle of research and innovation projects including horizon scanning, bid writing and support, awards management, reporting and audit requirements from funders.
Activities that RIKE can undertake with you to build your research portfolio include:
Creating knowledge exchange activities between the University and external organisations.
The aim of the IAA is to transform University of Huddersfield’s research into real-world opportunities.
A UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) scheme, managed by Innovate UK, connecting businesses with an innovative idea to an academic base.

The UK government has established Research Councils to assist in its goal to support research and innovation across the United Kingdom and beyond.
Some of the activity undertaken by the university is funded by organisations in the industry sector, learn more about Industry funding here.
Funding for research and consultancy may also be provided by Government Departments, local authorities and the NHS. Learn more about Government funding here.
Charities are another source of funding for research projects, you can find further information here.
The European Commission (EC) remains an important source of funding for UK universities.
In order to successfully apply for funding there needs to be an idea for research that is relevant and an appropriate source of funding for the idea.
Ideas can just be based on your own creativity and knowledge and there are a few calls that are based on responding to researcher curiosity usually Responsive Calls from Research councils and Discovery Calls from Wellcome Trust. The vast majority of calls will be based on answering challenges faced by society in the areas of health and well-being, security and food supply. Ideas that score highly for funding tend to be those that promise high impact, and significantly move the community towards solving current world and societal challenges.
Ideas can be generated during networking activities in discussions with colleagues, at conferences, sitting on review panels or advisory councils and meeting influencers in your area of expertise. Keeping up to date with trends in your research area can also spark ideas of what is needed next. Equally important is finding unmet needs in your research area and seeing how they can be filled.
The idea then needs to be transformed into a viable proposal. In the university, the RIKE team is here to help with all stages of the application process from development to submission.
A vision of the entire research process will need to be formulated to determine what resources are needed, what tasks need to be accomplished, an appropriate timeline and the expected outputs. If the outputs indicate possible commercialisation of intellectual property, then contact the Business Partnership team for input early regarding IP protection and patents if appropriate. RIKE Research services will provide support to produce costings of the resource requirements based on guidelines of appropriate funders and assist with development of the narrative elements of the application.
The costings will be produced in PAPA the university’s online research costing and approval tool to facilitate ease of sharing information and maintaining audit trails of the approval processes. The latter involves procedures in the school like peer and ethics reviews which help to improve the quality of submissions. Narrative elements of the application must adhere to the guidance from the funder which are usually stipulated in the funding call guidance.
When all internal approvals have been received the application is ready to be submitted to the funder as stipulated by them. For many funders this now involves an application portal like TFS (UKRI submissions) of Flexigrant (Major Charity submissions). Each have their own requirements so please be familiar with their processes to avoid disappointment during last minute submissions.
Let the RIKE team know when you have submitted an application in case there are any institutional requirements pertinent to a successful submission of your proposal.
RIKE team members are here to assist from developing proposals to managing successful grant proposals. Our primary centrally monitored email address is research.services@hud.ac.uk
For developing an idea through to submitting an application the Research Development Managers (RDM) are there to assist. For assistance with costings and development of proposals our research Support officers (RSO) are available to help. Currently our RDMs and RSOs are:
