What is this course about?

Understanding Deaf Awareness is crucial for fostering inclusive communities. Deafness encompasses a variety of hearing experiences, and each individual may face unique communication challenges. Learning basic sign language and exploring Deaf culture can significantly improve interactions with people who are Deaf or hard of hearing. Techniques such as lip reading and effective communication strategies can help bridge gaps and foster meaningful connections. It's important to recognise that individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing have diverse talents and can excel in all aspects of life.

Objectives

Here is what you can expect by attending this course:
  • Identify and apply strategies for effective communication, including lip reading and understanding deaf culture, to support interactions with individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Learn about basic sign language and its significance in promoting inclusive communication.
  • Learn about the various forms of deafness and their impact on communication, highlighting the spectrum of experiences within the deaf and hard of hearing communities.
