What is this course about?

Building successful academic-industry partnerships requires more than research excellence, it demands a strategic mindset shift and practical engagement skills. This one-hour session will help you understand why business engagement matters for your research impact and career, how to align your research with national industrial priorities, and introduce practical strategies for initiating and sustaining meaningful industry relationships.

You'll learn to position yourself as a solution provider and gain insights into effective approaches for engaging with industry partners.

Objectives

Here is what you can expect by attending this course:
  • Discover practical engagement strategies including first contact approaches, effective questioning techniques, and available support mechanisms (KTP, IAA, consultancy) from the R&I Business Development team.
  • Learn how to align your research with the UK government's Industrial Strategy Areas and frame your expertise in terms of industry-relevant outcomes and solutions.
  • Understand the strategic importance of business engagement and its role in research impact, university performance frameworks (REF, KEF, TEF), and mutual benefits for academics and industry.
