This page is here to support everyone who is research active, as well as those who support others in their research. It brings together useful ideas, resources and links to a range of university support services.
We know that great research grows best in a positive, supportive and inclusive environment. Looking after wellbeing is a vital part of building this kind of research culture and it’s something we can all play a role in.
Whether you’re seeking support for yourself, looking to support others, or simply want to explore ways to nurture wellbeing in your research practice, we invite you to take a look at the ideas and resources below.
Wellbeing in Academia
- Learn more about mental health and well-being in academia (UKRIO).
- THE Campus provides wellbeing insights from academics – for example Managing time, tasks and well-being in academia and ‘Joy doesn’t dilute academic rigour. It sustains it'.
- Voices of Academia aims to improve mental health and wellness in academia by giving researchers a voice - check out their blog.

Sensitive or emotionally challenging research
There can be additional risks and issues for researchers dealing with sensitive or emotionally challenging research topics.
- The RES-WELL toolkit is a comprehensive resource that provides further information and a ‘toolbox’ of practical strategies for supporting wellbeing.
- The Challenging Research Network supports academics working on emotionally demanding research.
- You could create a dedicated wellbeing plan for emotionally challenging research projects to help identify potential warning signs and consider strategies for support.

For individuals
- Look after your physical wellbeing - see what’s available via ActiveHud or even just take ten minutes for a quick walk round campus.
- Connect with other colleagues through groups such as Book Club, the Staff Choir, or by joining one of the university’s staff networks.

For managers of researchers…
- Incorporate wellbeing into your research team meetings as a regular discussion item to encourage open conversations and peer support.
- Access wellbeing information and resources for managers of researchers via the Prosper portal: supporting staff wellbeing.

University-wide support for all staff researchers
