Our Values and Behaviours
Welcome
Organisational values are essential to shaping the culture, behaviours and sense of community at the University of Huddersfield. Our values, Respect, Innovation, Support and Excellence, are underpinned by behaviours that guide how we work together and interact with others. Developed collaboratively, they reflect our shared expectations and lived experiences, helping to create a consistent, fair and inclusive environment for staff and students. By clearly defining what we stand for, our values strengthen our identity, support effective decision‑making and ensure we act in ways that align with our strategic ambitions. When lived every day, they build trust, enhance collaboration and contribute to a positive culture where everyone can thrive. This webpage outlines our RISE values, explains their meaning, showcases behaviours that reflect alignment with each value, and highlights actions that may conflict with or undermine them.

Our Values, Behaviours and the Employee Lifecycle
Our values and behaviours are embedded throughout the employee lifecycle. They guide recruitment and selection through behavioural‑based interviews that assess cultural fit and form a core part of induction so new starters understand expectations and feel a sense of belonging from day one. They are embedded into probation reviews, combining the “what” of the job description with the “how” of our values and behaviours to ensure colleagues demonstrate both capability and cultural alignment. They also underpin performance and development by providing a benchmark for feedback during 1:1s and PDPR discussions, ensuring performance is measured through both results and behaviours, and support talent management and succession planning by identifying colleagues who embody our culture.
